Franz Ferdinand have announced a number of Scottish shows in September. The band played a brace of low-key shows at Glasgow’s Grand Ole Opry in June of this year.

The low-key tour, on which they will play a number of new songs alongside old favourites, calls in at a number of Scottish towns previously un-visited by the band.

White Stripes come to town!

The White Striped have announced that they will embark on a UK tour later this year, hitting Glasgow on Octobe 26th.

The Detroit twosome will play the SECC as the very first date on their tour which will also visit Manchester,Newcastle,Birmingham,Cardiff,Sheffield,Nottingham, and London.

Global CD sales have slumped!! Record industry in state of despairrrr.....!!!

Well maybe not, but global CD sales have fallen more than had been expected, according to an industry reports.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said sales in 2006 dropped to 1.7bn, compared with 1.9bn in 2005.

On a happy note, digital music sales doubled last year, but overall music sales have still sadly sunk. IFPI chairman John Kennedy told BBC News: "While digital sales have grown as expected, physical sales have fallen by more than expected.

"Unfortunately this trend has continued in 2007. Physical sales continues top drop at a faster pace than we hoped for, particularly in the US and now also in the UK." However, Kennedy predicted that digital sales could grow by a further 50 per-cent this year.

Illegal downloads are not included in the figures but it is thought that there are 20 illegal downloads for every one legal download worldwide. Kennedy insisted that, and we're sure our readers will agree, "music is more popular than ever" but claims the recording industry is suffering from the much publicised piracy issues including CD copying. Kennedy is calling on the government and internet service providers to help curb the spread of piracy.

So basically, piracy = evil. Or does it? Discuss.

Final additions to T in the Park

The final additions to this year’s T in the Park line-up has been announced as The Bravery on the Radio1/NME Stage, Jamie Scott & The Town in the King Tut’s Tent and Ross Copperman in the Pet Sounds Arena!

Biffy to support Red Hot Chilis

Biffy Clyro have been chosen by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be the main support at their Hampden Park gig on 23 August 2007.

Along with the Chilis, Ayrshire band Biffy have also been invited to support the Rolling Stones in Barcelona on 21 June and Rome on 6 July.

On 23 June, Biffy will support Muse at Paris' Parc des Princes stadium, straight after their slot at Glastonbury! If that wasn't enough, they will also support The Who at Dublin's Marlay Park on 29 June.

After a summer of festivals and support slots, Biffy will headline their own tour in November 2007. The tour will include two awesome hometown shows at Glasgow Barrowland on 7 and 8 November!

Mobile Recording Studio Rolls into Glasgow

Glasgow’s aspiring singers have the chance to record a favourite track for free when the ‘Coca-Cola’ + iTunes mobile recording studio rolls into town this weekend (22nd/23rd June).

A state-of-the art recording studio, fully contained within the back of the ‘Coca-Cola’ + iTunes ten wheel articulated lorry, will be available for ten minute recording sessions. Groups and solo artists can record from a selection of classic or modern pop songs using the on-board recording equipment and karaoke style monitors to keep them on track. The recordings are then burnt to CD while the “talent” enjoy a complimentary soft drink.

As well as the recording studio 'Coca-Cola' and iTunes will be giving away an iPod nano in a free to enter competition. The mobile recording studio will also showcase Apple’s latest MacBook hardware and Apple TV.

The mobile recording studio will be at Tesco Silverburn on Friday 22nd June from 12pm and M&D's Scotland's Theme Park on Saturday 23rd June from 12pm.

Festival goers' love for music is being scrutinised this summer after a new report suggests that they are more interested in the social aspect of paryting at outdoor events such as Glastonbury and T in the Park. The survey found that each festival goer can spend up to £500 on each event.

Interestingly, under half (49%) of the 3,000 people surveyed were unable to remember all the bands they saw, whilst about a fifth (18%) admit they take in less than five hours of music over a festival weekend!
Along with this, a third of people are said to be suffering from the often fatal 'Kate Moss effect', feeling compelled to buy new outfits, tents and wellies for each festival.

Popup to play Britbus Tour Final 2007

Glasgow band Popup have been selected by a panel of New York University students as the UK unsigned band that they most want to see perform at the Britbus Tour final in New York 15 -19 June 2007. As winners the band will fly to New York and play at The Knitting Factory, Hoboken Parks and The Hard Rock Cafe NYC, and receive prizes that include a Premier Percussion drum kit, a Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar and an Ashdown bass amp!!

Other exciting news for Popup is that Adi their drummer has just been selected as the first female drummer to be endorsed by Premier Percussion in their 85 year history! Similarly, Michael has received endorsement from Ashdown for his bass amp. The band have been added to the sync roster of Danny Benair at The Natural Energy Lab Los Angeles who are responsible for placing artists like Bloc Party, 1990s, Tom Waits etc in advertisements, film and TV shows like Greys Anatomy and The O.C.

Popup were recently hailed as NME's band of the week and will be doing the usual festivals so be sure to check them out, as they are a lickmag favourite!

Franz unveil new tunes!

Franz Ferdinand pleased an adoring Glasgow crowd lastnight by unleashing five new songs at a gig at the Grand Ole Oprey country and western club.

Lead singer and hearthrob Alex Kapranos donned a black spotted neckerchief whilst intriducing new tracks such as 'Turn It On', 'Anyone In Love', 'New Thrill', 'An English Goodbye', and 'Favourite Lie'. The Glasgow favourites also performed favourites such as 'Take Me Out'. In between performances the band also brought a girl up on stage to help out with some drumming!

The new material marked a synth driven change of direction for the band who have been away for eight months.

Franz Ferdinand are set to appear at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee later this month, alongside greats such as The Flaming Lips and The White Stripes.

Franz Ferdinand to unveil new material in Glasgow!

Glasgow legends Franz Ferdinand are to play host to a few small shows in Glasgow and New York in the very near future.Bob Hardy, Franz's bassist, relvealed through MySpace that the band are planning to preview new material at the shows.

The message reads as follows:
"Hi, just a quick bulletin to tell you that we're planning a couple of small shows in Glasgow and one in New York in the next few weeks. We'll be trying out some new songs and inviting some other bands that we like to play with us. We'll let you know the details in the next few days, hopefully see you there."

The indie-pop band are also set to play the Bonnaroo festival, taking place June 14-17 in Manchester, Tennessee.

Explosions in The Sky have announced that due to family illness they will be unable to go ahead with their tour of the UK which was to start on May 19th.

Sadly this includes their much anticipated appereance at Glasgow's Indian Summer.

The band released a statement saying that, "The band extremely sorry for any inconvenience this causes, and will attempt to re-schedule as many dates as possible as soon as possible".

GLASGOW - OXJAM NEEDS YOU!

For the second year running, well known charity Oxfam are asking bands and promoters all over the UK to hold events dedicated to raising money and help stop poverty.
The project is called Oxjam, an exciting and fulfilling way for people to raise money and contribute to charity instead of just handing over the cash.
Oxjam is asking anyone whos capable to hold a gig of any size or style, this October, and give the money raised towards helping world poverty.
Last year the project raised an amazing half a million pounds in total, that's enough to provide water and sanitation for nearly 700 thousand people or to build 294 classrooms.

For those of you who haven't already heard, the music festival which was set to put Greenock on the map has been cancelled. White 52 Management had to call it a day on Doon the Watter due to lack of demand. The guys issued this announcement:

Bands are required to send their demos in now for the penultimate Your Sound of Term 2, which will be their very last chance to get onto the May playlist making them eligible to perform on the Your Sound Bandstand at Connect, hosted at Inveraray Castle from August 30th until 2nd September.
The acts featured on the playlist on Sunday 6th May at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut from 4pm until 8pm will be the final bands to be considered.

A judging panel made up of promoters DF Concerts and some of the delegates from past Your Sounds will decide on the 20 bands that will be lucky enough to perform at the very first year of Connect and the decision will be announced at the June Your Sound.

To be in with a chance of becoming May’s Artist of the Month, being added to the playlist and even a space on the Your Sound bandstand at Connect send your demo in now for consideration. School children given a 'headstart' in the music industry

University of Paisley students have been putting their industry knowledge to good use recently, planning to help Ayrshire teenagers get their foot in the door before the rest.
The newly formed company, "Headstart" was set up by two 3rd year students, Anne and Lorraine who are studying Commercial Music at the Ayr campus of the university.
The girls will run a pilot scheme of the half-day course which will aim to inform 15-17yr olds about the basic technical, business and performance skills expected in the music industry.
Headstart hope to run the workshop again and ask colleges and universities to recognise it as a qualification, helping school children create a direct path to further and higher education.

Greenock is set to host its very first music festival, “Doon The Watter” with a hot line up of Scottish local and rising talent on the bill.

The Bluetones will play the one-day festival taking place in Greenock’s Cappielow Park, with other bands such as the Cinematics, My Latest Novel and Drive By Argument gracing the stage on Saturday May 19th.

Greenock-based promoters White 52 have arranged the gig hoping to attract music-lovers from all over Scotland. Managing Director Tommy McGovern said: “The bill has a deliberately broad musical appeal – we want to bring the community together and welcome an audience from Glasgow and beyond”.

Glasgow band The Hedrons are pleased to announce that they have made a mighty return to the official UK indie charts with their debut album 'One More Won't Kill Us' where it was a new entry in the indie album chart at number 39.

'Making It' is Big in Falkirk's hot new live music competition, open to performers looking to get noticed in the Scottish music industry.

Hue and Cry first made their mark in the late eighties with hit singles such as ‘Labour of Love’ (1987), ‘Violently’ (1988) and ‘Looking For Linda’ (1989). Their winning style of strongly written pop songs fused with jazz and soul saw them enjoy huge chart success with their debut album ‘Seduced and Abandoned’ quickly followed by the release of their second album ‘Remote’.

Now, fresh from an active year of recording new material for an upcoming album, the pop duo are due to play three very special shows in November, including a gig at the ABC in Glasgow supporting Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy In Scotland, a charity providing music therapy to over 30,000 children and adults in need across the UK.

Glasgow's Blind Pew Pen A Deal

One of Scotland’s most popular and promising live acts has finally achieved the recognition it deserves… Occasionally irreverent, often satirical and always ear-catching, Glasgow-based Blind Pew have recently signed to London-based A List Records. "In terms of performance and timeless, quality songs, Blind Pew stand ten feet taller than everyone else” says Cary George, Chairman of A List Music Group. “We are delighted at this signing.”

The band’s first single will be released on A List in early 2007, followed by their as-yet-untitled debut album.

“Signing a record deal is our biggest achievement to date. As a band, you slog away for so many years and then finally someone has as much faith in the music as you do. It feels like a good bowl of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes,” says Blind Pew guitarist and longtime cereal-endorser Paul McGranaghan.

To celebrate their signing – and showcase some new material to their growing legion of fans - Blind Pew will play two shows next month: Glasgow (Nice ‘n’ Sleazy, 4th November) and Edinburgh (Bannerman’s, 3rd November). Chemikal Launch New Studio

Chemikal Underground, the Scottish label that’s been key to the success of acts such as Mogwai, Arab Strap, Malcolm Middleton, The Delgados, Mother and The Addicts and De Rosa will this month launch the rebuild of its famous studio, Chem19.

Originally located in Hamilton (where rehearsal studios will remain), the new and improved recording space is now based in Blantyre and looks set to attract established and new recording artists from across Scotland, the UK and beyond. Housing two, hi-spec digital and analogue studios and world class recording equipment, Chem19 dispels the distinctly ‘indie’ myth of the dark ‘n’ dingy recording experience.

“The idea behind Chem19’s re-build was to take the atmosphere and ethos of the existing studio but build it from scratch,” says Emma Pollock, former Delgados’ vocalist and co-founder of Chemikal Underground. “We’ve aimed to create the perfect recording space with large rooms and natural daylight. It’s also set in peaceful surroundings and within easy reach of the city.”

Chem19’s re-launch also underlines and develops the integral role that Chemikal Underground – a partnership that includes all four former Delgados’ members - has played in the Scottish music industry. Since its humble beginnings in The Delgados’ kitchen in 1994, to its now near-iconic label status and world-class studio premises, the label has nurtured and developed some of the biggest names on the UK music scene.

While the new studio has already welcomed artists such as Vashti Bunyan, The Trash Can Sinatras, King Creosote, De Rosa and Camera Obscura through its doors, Chem19 will offer a new generation of Scottish musicians the chance to take advantage of Chemikal’s core talent.

Engineers Andy Miller and Paul Savage (former Delgados’ drummer and Pollock’s husband) boast impressive track records: Savage has worked with, among others, Mogwai, Arab Strap, Malcolm Middleton, The Trashcan Sinatras and Teenage Fanclub and Andy Miller has worked with The Fratellis and on Sons and Daughters and My Latest Novel’s debut releases.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer an improved recording option to our existing roster,” says Pollock. “With two, top-quality studios we can now accommodate any request.

“We really hope to broaden our appeal to bands across the world whilst remaining affordable to young, local musicians who want to record demos.”

DF Concerts have started a small record label under the name King Tuts Recordings. With a similar set up to Fierce Panda, King Tuts Recordings will release a couple of singles a year working with Sottish based artists with the aim to help promote the young talent and shoot them up to bigger and better things.

The First band to appear on King Tuts Recordings will be Glasgow based 4 piece, the Dykeenies who will release New Ideas through iTunes on the 10th and in the shops on the 17th.
